University of Oregon faculty exhibition features range of contemporary art

Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art presents ‘Eye Contact’ Jan. 27 through April 9

EUGENE—(Dec. 16, 2005)—The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon will begin the new year with a large contemporary art exhibition featuring the work of 26 faculty member artists.

The exhibit, “Eye Contact,” opens with a free, public preview reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, and runs through April 9.

“Eye Contact” marks the first faculty exhibition in the newly expanded museum. The artwork represents a wide variety of media including painting, sculpture, ceramics, fibers, jewelry and metalsmithing, photography and digital arts. The work included in the exhibition ranges from objects and drawings to installations.

“The show will provide visitors with a unique view of the ever-evolving contemporary art scene through the eyes of professional artists,” said Lawrence Fong, curator of American and regional art at the museum. “The museum is thrilled to provide visitors with an opportunity to discover work that, in many cases, can only be seen in major cities across the United States and beyond.”

A full calendar of exhibition-related programming includes artist gallery talks and a special lecture by Bruce Guenther, chief curator of contemporary and modern art at the Portland Art Museum, on Wed., March 15.

The exhibition is supported by the David McCosh and Anne Kutka McCosh Memorial Museum Endowment Fund.

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is located at 1430 Johnson Lane on the university ‘s campus. The museum is open Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Thursdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admissions fees are adults, $5; seniors (62 and older) and students (high school and non-UO college with ID), $3. Admission is free to museum members, students, faculty and staff members with ID, and children 13 and under. The museum offers “pay-as-you-wish MusEvenings!” every Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and free admission to everyone the first Friday of each month.
