Explore the West at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art's free family day

EUGENE-Take an imaginary journey across the American West like the early pioneers. Create your own travel sketchbook, investigate photography methods and paint landscapes at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s free “Exploring the West” family day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, at the University of Oregon.

Inspired by the museum’s current landscape photography exhibition, “Advocates for the Land: Photography in the American West,” the museum will offer a wide range of activities for people of all ages, including sketching nature and making sun prints in the outdoor courtyard. Visitors will also enjoy a puppet show performance and refreshments.

The day also includes a 2 p.m. lecture about historical maps of the West. James Walker, a local map collector, will present “Surveys of the Trans-Mississippi West: Scientific and Commercial Mapping, 1840-80.”

“The talk will focus on the mapping output of several western U.S. survey expeditions conducted in the 1800s including those of John Fremont, Joseph Ives, John Mullan and George Wheeler,” explains Walker. “We will also briefly examine some of the commercial maps of the West published during this period.”

The free family day event is made possible by Tim and Lisa Clevenger. The lecture is sponsored by Selco Community Credit Union of Eugene.

General museum hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays through Sundays. The Marché Museum Café and Museum Store are open seven days a week. Museum admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors, high school students and non-UO students. Museum members; children 13 and under; and UO faculty, staff members and students are free. The museum is located on the west side of campus at 1430 Johnson Lane.
