Last chance to see Warhol Exhibition at UO Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art
EUGENE-If you have been meaning to see the Andy Warhol exhibition at the University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, this is your last chance. "Andy Warhol's Dream America," which features more than 100 screenprints from the collection of the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, is on view through Sunday, May 1, at 1430 Johnson Lane on the UO campus.
Since the exhibition opened in conjunction with the museum's grand reopening in January, more than 24,000 people have visited the museum. This nearly doubles the museum's average attendance before its major renovation and expansion project.
"This exhibition has received rave reviews from a diverse range of visitors," explains museum director David Turner. "In fact, Tom Sokolowski, the director of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, highly praised the exhibition while attending the museum as a visiting lecturer in January."
The exhibition features some of the late artist's most popular "suites" or portfolios of work, including the "Maos," "Marilyn Monroes," "Campbell's Soup," "Mick Jaggers," "Ten Jews" and "Cowboys & Indians." Among the individual prints are "John F. Kennedy Campaign Poster" from the "Flash" portfolio as well as the suite's cover, "Jackie I" and "Jackie II," and several revealing self-portraits.
Andy Warhol is noted for his dissection of American commerce and everyday life and his reverence for and playful exploration of American popular culture. His art is perhaps among the most accessible yet complex to emerge out of the 20th century. "Andy Warhol's Dream America" features work in a variety of printmaking media, including aquatint, dry point, etching, lithography, mono print, photogravure, woodcut and screenprint.
After leaving Eugene, the exhibition will continue to tour with stops in Texas, Colorado, Arizona and California. "Andy Warhol's Dream America" has been made possible by a major grant from the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation.
Following the Warhol show, "MFA 2005" will debut at the museum on Friday, May 13, with a free, public opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
General museum hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays through Sundays. The Marché Museum Café and Museum Store are open seven days a week. Museum admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors, high school students and non-UO students. Museum members; children 13 and under; and UO faculty, staff members and students are free. Wednesday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. admission is "pay-as-you-wish." The museum is located on the west side of campus at 1430 Johnson Lane.
