The University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and School of Architecture and Allied Arts are presenting the nationally-acclaimed PBS Series “Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century” in three separate events on Feb. 4 and 5 at the art museum, 1430 Johnson Lane on the UO campus. Each two-hour program, free with museum admission, includes a film screening followed by a unique panel discussion.

Art:21 and PBS director of education and outreach, Jessica Hamlin, are coming to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art as part of a regional initiative to introduce local and statewide audiences to contemporary visual artists,” explains Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art director of education Lisa Abia-Smith. “We have planned three unique events to provide specific audiences with opportunities to consider contemporary art based on the voices of a diverse range of visual artists working across the United States today.“

College and university art department faculty and teaching fellows interested in instructing with contemporary art are invited to attend a workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4 led by Doug Blandy, associate director for the UO School of Architecture of Allied Arts. A workshop for K-12 teachers will be offered from 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 4 and will include accompanying educational resources and materials. The general public is invited to a special presentation on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that will be followed with a panel discussion facilitated by Hamlin and featuring Eugene artist Betsy Wolfston and Stuart Horodner, former curator at Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA).

Art:21 is a non-profit contemporary art organization dedicated to making contemporary visual art and artists accessible to local and national audiences through its Emmy-nominated, primetime series, website (www.pbs.org/art21), curricular resources and extensive outreach programming.

Funding for these events has been provided by a generous grant from the Allen Foundation.
