HOW TO USE THE JORDAN SCHNITZER MUSEUM OF ART
Faculty and students at the University of Oregon are encouraged to use the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art's collections, exhibitions, and facilities to support teaching and research as well as to complement campus activities such as residential education. The following information is provided to better acquaint the university community with the museum and its services.
Scheduling Class Visits or Assignments
The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is always free to University of Oregon students, faculty, and staff with ID. The museum welcomes classes to visit the galleries. If asking your students to visit the museum individually to fulfill an assignment or complete a project, please remind them of the following museum policies:
- Please stop by the Admissions Desk to obtain a visitor's pin and wear it visibly during the visit. Please help us recycle the pins by returning it to the Admissions Desk at the end of the visit.
- Deposit bags larger than 12"x12", drinks, and coats in the Coat Room lockers or behind the Admissions Desk. No food or drink is allowed in the galleries. Lockers require a quarter deposit; your money will be returned when you collect your belongings.
- Please turn off cell phones while in the museum galleries.
- Still photography for private, noncommercial use only is permitted throughout the JSMA. Photographs cannot be published, sold, reproduced, transferred, distributed, or otherwise commercially exploited in any manner whatsoever. Works of art on loan from private collections or other institutions may not be photographed. The use of a flash is prohibited. Tripods, movie cameras, and video cameras are prohibited, unless a special use permit has been obtained. (Permit applications may be downloaded from the JSMA homepage, and must be submitted at least 2 business days in advance.)
- It is allowable to use notebooks, sketchpads, pencils, and laptop in the galleries.
- To facilitate check-in, please send a class roster to jsmadesk@uoregon.edu and indicate the date of your planned visit.
Scheduling Guided Tours
Public guided tours of the museum are offered the first Saturday of the month at 1:00 p.m. and are free with museum admission. Visitors are asked to meet in the lobby five minutes before the tour. Tours will last approximately forty-five minutes.
Private group tours may be scheduled Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday mornings at 9:15, 10:15, or 11:15 a.m. To schedule a tour, submit a tour request form at least 4 weeks in advance. Requests for tours outside these regular time slots must be submitted 6 weeks in advance and are subject to guide availability. Requests cannot be made by phone or email. To reserve a tour, please complete the Non-School Tour Request Form.
Planning for Changing Exhibitions
Exhibitions are organized or selected in large part for their potential value to the academic community. Faculty members are encouraged to contact associate director Lawrence Fong for a list of future exhibitions so that they may consider developing a course, seminar, symposium, or other activity in conjunction with an exhibition. Faculty are invited to contact museum curators to discuss possible collaborations and curricular links concerning future exhibitions.
Using the Facilities
The museum includes meeting and reception areas that may be reserved for university functions. University affiliated groups are offered specially discounted rates. Read more about our facility rental program or contact special events manager Miriam Jordan at mjordan@uoregon.edu or (541) 346-0973.
ArtsBridge at the UO
ArtsBridge at the University of Oregon, part of the ArtsBridge America network, works in partnership with local public schools to provide high-quality arts education to K-12 school children. Stipends are given to those undergraduate and graduate students who teach the arts and lead projects in art, drama, dance, and music.
K-12 teaching opportunities are available for top UO students in the visual and performing arts. UO students (scholars) interested in participating in UO ArtsBridge are asked to complete a scholar application form and mail it to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.
Internships
University students interested in gaining experience at an art museum may also get involved through museum internships, practicum experiences, Special Exhibition Interpreter and Gallery Guide positions, and volunteer opportunities (download volunteer application).
