ArtsBridge Scholar: Jennifer Kuhn
Discipline: Dance
Semester / Year: Fall 2002
Project Title: Choreographing a Short Performance
Faculty Mentor: Carol Iwaki
Host School: Beacon Heights Elementary
Grade Level(s): 5th Grade
Host Teacher: Stevie Woodland
Number of English Language Learners: 29
The goals of the project are to provide the students with a basic understanding of the elements of dance, including space, time, and energy. The ultimate outcome will be a performance incorporating all of the students in the class. This performance will demonstrate the elements of dance that the class will have learned and perfected. In addition the students are working on the poetry of Shel Silverstein. The goal is to base the choreography on Silverstein's poetry and to incorporate the thematic study of literature with the study of dance.
When students begin to initiate the movement associated with the academic lessons the goals of the project will have been accomplished. With every progressive step that the students make they are tested for their understanding of the basic elements of dance. That way the class can make small steps to accomplish the project goal by careful watching the students progression and helping those that need improvement. The students will be able to show evidence of their learning through the final performance. In addition, group performances are an integral part of the lesson and the students are tested as groups as well as individually.
The culminating presentation will be a live performance held the morning of December 13, 2002. The performance will be primarily dance, incorporating the movements we are working on in the lessons. The students will also participate in the selected readings of Shel Silverstein's poems. The poems will serve as an accompaniment to the dance. Parents and family are invited to the performance as well as several other classes.

Parents:The parents will have the opportunity to watch their children share their talents with others. They will also have the opportunity to be involved with the performance themselves.
The project will be well documented primarily through photography and journals. The performance will also be videotaped and put together with other pieces to show the process that went into putting the production together. The students are also keeping journals as part of the project and as part of their literature grade.
There will be the opportunity to integrate technology into the project as a slide show in the performance. This would allow us to show the steps involved in producing the performance from the beginning to the end. There will also be the final product of the performance.
