UO MUSEUM OF ART ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR SELECTED FOR GETTY LEADERSHIP
INSTITUTE
EUGENE-University of Oregon Museum of Art (UOMA) associate director
Lawrence Fong is one of thirty-five museum professionals from around the world
to be selected to attend the Getty Leadership Institute’s 2003 Museum
Management Institute. The three-week residential course for museum directors
and senior executives takes place at the University of California, Berkeley
this June and offers learning opportunities designed to strengthen museum
professionals and their institutions in the face of growing complexities.
“This is a wonderful opportunity that comes at a key time in the Museum
of Art’s development,” explains Fong. “I look to bring back
knowledge that will help us best prepare ourselves to move back into a larger
facility that will inherently carry greater expectations.”
The academically rigorous experience addresses such pressing issues as reaching
and serving new and diverse audiences, achieving financial stability, leading
organizational change, and enhancing staff and board effectiveness. Faculty
members are drawn from the top ranks of institutions offering executive education,
including Stanford University, the University of Virginia, and Dartmouth College.
Significant learning opportunities also come from working with fellow attendees
throughout the workshop. This year’s class roster includes museum professionals
from around the world, including Boston, Chicago, and Washington DC, as well
as the United Kingdom, Russia, the Netherlands, and Mexico.
